RAIPUR: After a newborn fell into a dustbin soon after birth at the government hospital in Bastar district headquarters of Jagdalpur, an inquiry into the incident has found hospital administration responsible for lapse, pointing to the wrong role of nurses during delivery.

Meanwhile, the matter of the newborn falling into dustbin soon after birth as doctors were busy gossiping outside labour room in a government hospital in Jagdalpur also echoed in the Vidhan sabha with Congress legislators raising it during the zero hour.

Collector Bastar, who was probing the matter, confirmed the laxity of hospital administration and has ordered strict action on the nursing staff. The baby is critical and admitted in NICU.

The horrific incident took place with Soni Baghel from Bilori village in Bastar. She was brought to Medical College Jagdalpur on March 20 by her ‘Mitanin’ Champa Devi. (Over 60,000 women are working in Chhattisgarh as community health workers called Mitanins and give health support at the village level.) The patient was asked to lie on one of the beds in labour room and the nurses and doctors left the room leaving her screaming out of labour pains. The doctors asked the woman’s kin to leave the labour room while the ‘Mitanin’ remained inside.

Within a few minutes, Soni gave birth to a baby girl who directly fell into the dustbin which was already filled with medical waste. The agony of tribal mother didn’t end here as doctors who entered the labour room after hearing her yelling asked her to clear the blood and stains from the floor as the cost of saving her baby.

The hospital administration tried hard to hide the matter but failed as the ‘Mitanin’ who took the woman to hospital revealed the horror to the local youth Congress leaders.

Talking to TOI, Champa said, “The sound of baby falling on floor was like if coconut has fallen from the tree. The doctors cut the umbilical cord of the baby from the wrong direction. The doctor also threatened me to not to reveal the matter in front of anyone and also said that they will be never treat patients brought by me.”

The hospital staff admitted the baby in NICU after she got severe infection after getting in contact with waste soon after the birth. The laxity of the hospital administration can be gauge with the fact that the hospital administration haven’t conduct any probe in the matter, even when both the parents and Metanin shared the ordeal with senior officials of the hospital.

Avinash Meshram, joint director of Jagdalpur medical college said that he has informed about the incident to the senior health department authorities.

The baby’s condition is serious. But the laxity was from the side of ‘Mitanin’ and not from our staff, said Avinash Meshram. After the hospital authorities failed to take any action on the accused staff, the district administration swung into action after youth Congress leaders staged protest.

Talking to TOI, collector Bastar, Amit Kataria informed that a probe team, head by additional district magistrate found hospital staff guilty in the matter.

“I have submitted a report to the health authorities today. The nurses have played really wrong role in the delivery.
