Health centre in Bhilwara refused to admit pregnant woman

The National Human Rights Commission has asked the Rajasthan government to pay Rs. 50,000 to a woman who was forced to give birth to her child by the roadside because of medical negligence at Kareda in Bhilwara district. The NHRC has asked the Chief Secretary to send a compliance report along with proof of payment.

The Commission took cognisance of a complaint, filed by a human rights activist, that a pregnant woman was taken to the residence of a male doctor of the Kareda Community Health Centre on August 3, 2011. He referred her to the health centre but the staff there refused to admit her.

Family members began taking the woman to the residence of a woman doctor of the centre but the child was born before she could reach. The NHRC found a nursing employee guilty of dereliction of duty and disciplinary action was initiated against him. The inquiry also exposed lack of coordination between the doctors. The male doctor was transferred and a proposal for disciplinary action against the woman doctor was forwarded to the Directorate of Health.
