BHUBANESWAR: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to the Director General of Police of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh over sexual harassment of girl students in Air Hostess and Hospitality Academy.

Acting of a petition filed by Subash Mohapatra of Bhubaneswar based Global Human Rights Communications, the apex human rights body called for report within four weeks.

The petitioner has alleged that students are being sexually harassed in the name of placement by the Air Hostess and Hospitality Academy and they were sent to Hyderabad for placement where they were sexually harassed.

The students had also filed the complaint in City’s Kharvel Nagar police Station, but no action was taken so far.

“The students were being sent outside the State for jobs and they were being sexually harassed. Moreover, the students also alleged that the institute was charging hefty sum in the name of course fee. However, they have failed to conduct the exams and provide the certificates”, Mohapatra alleged.

“The students were being told that in six months they will be placed in a reputed airline, but neither the institute has given them placements nor has it conducted any exams. Moreover, the girls are being sent to hotels where they are sexually harassed and being told that they have to compromise for their career” he added.

The failure and inaction of the law enforcement agency has irked the students.

NHRC was urged to direct the concerned state governments to bring the culprits into court of justice and payment of interim compensation Rs.10 lakh to each student.
