A day after a pregnant woman was allegedly beaten to death at the district headquarters hospital in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj, the nurse has been placed under suspension by the district administration today.

The deceased identified as Debajani, wife of Khudiram Singh of Kainsali village under Badasahi block in Mayurbhanj district, was allegedly beaten up by the nurse and forced to sleep on the floor from the bed. Moments later, Debjani died.

Debjani was admitted to the government-run hospital on Sunday and was to undergo surgery yesterday.

Following the incident, tension ran high in the hospital premises demanding compensation to the deceased and stringent action against the nurse. Police personnel were deployed in the hospital to maintain law and order.

Incensed family members and locals gheraoed the office of the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) demanding action against the nurse. The agitators withdrew their protest after the district administration assured them of action against the wrongdoers.

“The woman was in labour pain and the nurse beat her up; kicked her. She said that you and your ASHA worker both are uncivilised. She spread out a bedsheet and forced the woman to lie on the floor inside the labour room,” ASHA worker, who accompanied Visakha Mohanty to the hospital, said.

“We have directed the authorities to probe into the incident,” Baripada CDMO, Chandan Murmu said.

“We have asked CDMO to suspend the nurse and initiate departmental inquiry into the incident. It appears to be a case of medical negligence,” Baripada sub-collector Diganta Routray said.
