They accuse the director of pimping them out to their employers

Former female students of an air hostess training institute in Bhubaneswar allegedly beat up the institute director on Wednesday, accusing him of attempts to hush up sexual abuse charges against their employers recommended by him, reports said.

Around 50 students of the Air Hostess and Hospitality Academy (AHHA) near Ram Mandir Square vandalised the institute, damaging computers and furniture. They allegedly dragged out a few officials, including director Dilip Routray, from their chambers and manhandled them, reports said.

Routray is not directly accused of sexually abusing any student, but CNN-IBN said he was targeted by students for his perceived complicity in instances of sexual harassment.

According to a report, the institute maintained silence when students complained of sexual harassment by their employers, who were recommended by the institute.

“The institute had sent me to Hyderabad through campus placement. Our employer harassed us sexually and forced me to consume liquor. When I brought the matter to the notice of the AHHA authorities, they advised me to keep quiet. Though I was assured a monthly salary of Rs 15,000, I was paid only half of it,” a girl student of the institute was quoted as saying.

The institute offers one-year diploma courses in aviation and hospitality management. It has a seat capacity of around 50, according to a report. The students also accused the institute of delaying the issue of their course completion certificate.

“The institute has been running since 2007. It charges students around Rs 1.5 lakh for each course. Though our academic session got over six months ago, we still haven’t received our provisional certificates. In the absence of our certificates, we are unable to apply for any job,” said a student who identified himself to Telegraph as Binayak.

“The institute has been luring candidates with assurance of 100 per cent placement and the website of the institute has also uploaded photographs of its students in leading airlines across the country. But when we asked, our seniors gave us the true picture,” another student said.

“I was dragged by the students whom I considered as my children and mercilessly beaten up,” Routray was quoted as saying. The AHHA director denied receiving complaints of sexual harassment from its students.
