JALANDHAR – A 19-year-old Dalit girl of Shahkot, located 45 km from here, was allegedly murdered by her parents as she chose to have an affair with a boy from Nakodar who was outside the family’s caste.

The victim, Kajol, was a BCA student at Janta College in Nakodar.

The police have arrested the victim’s parents, who had even cremated the girl’s body at the village cremation while citing that she had suffered cardiac arrest.

The matter came to light after the boy, Gurvinder Singh (25), approached the police and charged the girl’s parents with murder.

The accused parents have been identified as Raj Kumar and his wife Manjit Kaur, resident of Billi Chaharmi village.

The victim’s minor brothers were also booked, though they were not detained as their role in the crime was yet to be established.

In his complaint to the police, Gurvinder, a private bus cleaner of Bhullar village, alleged that he was in a relationship with the victim for the past over six months, and that they both were planning to marry soon.

“On April 18, Kajol had come to meet me at my house and she stayed there for some time and left. At night, she rang me up and told me that her parents had come to know about our relationship and were very angry,” he said. He alleged Kajol’s parents had murdered her and to escape police questioning, they even cremated the body in haste.

Shahkot DSP Mandeep Singh said the victim’s parents had been arrested. He said the duo had confessed to their crime.
