ALWAR: A youth burnt his 19-year-old sister to death with the help of his relatives, when she insisted that she wanted to marry her boyfriend, who belongs to another caste, and buried her remains in their agricultural land on March 31. Her brother Debendra Meena was arrested on Sunday for murdering her and an FIR has been lodged against nine other relatives too who are at large.

The police officials said the girl had eloped with her boyfriend but on court’s order the police found her and handed her over to her family nearly a month ago. The brother and other relatives thought she was bringing dishonour to the family, so that they murdered her, police said. According to the police, the girl, Radha Meena was a resident of Kasotikheda village in Dholpur‘s Badi area.

A police officer said Radha had eloped with one Purushottam Nai nearly two and a half months ago. The family members registered an FIR accusing Purushottam of kidnapping the girl. On court’s direction, the police found the girl nearly one month ago and handed her over to her family members.

The family members were depressed because they thought she had brought dishonour to her family by eloping with a man from another caste. The girl, however, kept insisting that she would get married to Purushottam only.

Devendra on March 31 told his parents that he was taking Radha to his cousin’s house. He then brought her to their farm, nearly a kilometre from their house. His uncles and cousins were already there.

They then asked her about her final decision if she would marry the boy of their choice or continue being in a relationship with Purushottam. The girl refused to budge following which Debendra strangled her. When she drifted into unconsciousness, they put her on a pyre and set it ablaze.

On seeing flames coming from the farm, some nearby farmers even rushed to the place and saw what was happening, but they didn’t intervene. After she was brunt, Debendra and other relatives buried her remains.

The police got a tip-off from an informer about the incident recently following which some cops in plain clothes were sent to the village. Many villagers knew about the incident but they chose not to report it.

“It’s a clear case of honour killing. We have arrested the brother and a search has been launched for other relatives as well,” said SP Dholpur Rajesh Singh.
