In a suspected case of “honour killing”, the police have arrested the parents, two brothers and two sisters of a 19-year-old Dalit girl whose body was found in an open field in Sujanganj police station area in Jaunpur on June 12. The victim is a native of neighbouring Pratapgarh district.

The police said the family, which had already fixed the girl’s marriage with someone else, “decided to kill her when she refused to snap ties with a youth she was having an affair”.

Claiming that all the six arrested members have confessed to the crime, Sujanganj SO K K Mishra said the girl’s elder brother slit her throat with a sharp-edged weapon while others caught hold of her. After she died, they carried her body to the neighbouring Jaunpur district and dumped it in an open field.

The police have also arrested the Jaunpur resident with whom the girl was having an affair. The youth, a Dalit, works as a tailor.

The spot where the body was recovered is around 300 meters from the victim’s residence in a village in Pratapgarh.

The girl’s father works in Allahabad while both his sons are daily-wage labourers.

On the intervening night of June 11 and June 12, the girl’s mother and two sisters took her to an isolated place on the pretext of meeting someone where her father and the two brothers were already present. The elder brother then slit her throat with a sharp-edged weapon while others kept their hold on her, Mishra said. They then dumped the body another 100-odd metres from the spot. The body was discovered by villagers next morning who then informed the police.

The accused brother later visited the spot and identified the body as that of her sister, and then filed an FIR against two unidentified persons for killing his sister at the Patti police station in Pratapgarh.

Superintendent of Police, Jaunpur, Bharat Singh said investigations have revealed that on June 11, a few hours before the murder, the youth had met the victim and threatened that he would commit suicide if she did not call off her marriage that her family had fixed for her.
The police said that when she returned home after convincing the youth “not to take any extreme step”, a heated argument took place between her and the family members, following which the family decided to kill her.

All seven persons were produced before the court which has sent them to judicial custody.
