Press Statement:

Date:  14th August, 2015

Delhi Police converts ‘independence day’ into a ‘day of slavery’ for large number of peaceful protesters at Jantar Mantar.

People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) Delhi strongly condemns the ruthless and inhuman manner in which Delhi Police today went on evicting the peaceful protesters and ransacking there seating arrangements at the Jantar Mantar, New Delhi in the name of security arrangements.

It was shocking that even the ex-servicemen who have been holding their sit-in ‘dharnaa’ for the last several weeks, were considered threat to security and were humiliated.  Though they were allowed to continue when they confronted the police with tough resistance, the conditions imposed upon them by the Delhi police are adding insult to injury.

There is no reason why several other peaceful protesters were not allowed to continue at the same place. It is beyond comprehension as to how continuation of peaceful protests at Jantar Mantar becomes a security threat to the nation at a time when we are celebrating Independence Day. It is unfortunate that the Delhi Police has turned Independence Day into a ‘day of slavery’ for large number of peaceful protesters.

PUCL (Delhi) deplores the action of the Delhi Police and demands that the peaceful protesters should be allowed to continue their agitation at the same place without any hindrance.
