A citizens’ march was taken out in the Capital on Saturday protesting the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992, and demanding punishment for those responsible for the incident.

People from various organisations including the All India Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA), All India Students’ Association (AISA), Communist Party of India, United Muslim Front and others participated in the march. They marched from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar carrying placards in their hands that read “Punish the people responsible for Babri Masjid demolition” and “Injustice with one is injustice for all”.

“This is one of the darkest days in the history of independent India. On this day an unruly mob of anti-social elements was allowed to attack ‘Babri Masjid’,” said a protester.

People’s Union for Civil Liberties’ Delhi president N.D. Pancholi said: “Demolition of Babri Masjid was a major attack after independence… Those who were in power remained silent and let the attackers have their way.”

“I fear that the present government is also going the same way. They have a definite agenda to convert India into a Hindu nation. We have gathered here to show them that people are not ready to accept their idea,” he added.

National Integration Council former member Navaid Hamid said: “One of the main reason people are here today is that they want to renounce attempts to undermine the Constitution of India. The mosque demolition was a constitutional issue and not a religious issue. When the Supreme Court had ordered to maintain a status quo, how can something like Babri Masjid demolition happen?”

“From Babri Masjid to Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti’s speech today, it exposes the ideology which is trying to divide people on religious lines. People who have gathered here are raising their voice against this ideology,” he added.

He further added that the Modi Government should have a fast-track judgement on this case. “People who are responsible for the attack should be punished,” he said.
