The case has been registered under the Punjab Prohibition of Cow Slaughter Act on a complaint filed by a Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha activist.
According to the FIR registered at Maqsoodan police station, Ritesh Nigam, district programme incharge of BJYM, in his complaint claimed that he was going towards Raipur Ballan village for supplying milk when he found Paramjit Singh, a dalit of village Pandori near Nakodar, removing skin of a dead cow.
Several activists of Bajrang Dal and BJYM also reached the spot after hearing about the incident. “When I asked Paramjit to stop removing the skin, he started arguing with me,” Nigam said.
Following the complaint, police registered a case against the dalit under Section 295 of IPC (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class or any object held sacred by any class of persons with the intention of thereby insulting the religion of any class of persons) and Section 5 of Punjab Prohibition of Cow Slaughter Act which prohibits sale of beef.
When contacted, Punjab Gau Sewa Commission chairman Kimti Bhagat said there was no law or instruction which prohibited skinning of a dead cow.
“Commission has also not passed any such instructions,” he said.
However, Maqsoodan police station SHO Bikram Singh said a case was registered against the accused under Cow Slaughter Act as later prohibited selling of beef products.
