Disappointed with the slow pace of investigation by Ludhiana police in Dr Supriya’s suicide case, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has summoned the director general of police, and the police commissioner and deputy commissioner of Ludhiana, on November 3.

Raj Kumar Verka, vice-chairman of the commission, said even when the bail application of two doctor colleagues of the victim named in the FIR has been rejected by the court, “police have not arrested the accused”. After the investigation, the police filed proceedings under section 174 of the CrPC, and later registered a case of abetment to suicide against Dr Puneet Punni and Dr Deepak Bhatt of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in the case.

Hence, the NCSC has now summoned DGP Sumedh Singh Saini, Ludhiana police commissioner Pramod Ban and DCP Rajat Aggarwal at New Delhi.

The police have already told the commission that enough evidence was not there to arrest the doctors.

But Verka insisted that the commission would also seek a report from police in the case and try to know as to how the police have proceeded in the case.

Dr Supriya, who was a student of second year of MD in the department of paediatrics at DMCH, had committed suicide on September 29 at her hostel. She had also left a suicide note that was recovered by police.

Kin alleges fellow doctors of harassment

Just a day after suicide attempted by a woman doctor at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), kin of the deceased have levelled serious allegations against fellow doctors and seniors for harassing her. Though no case has been registered in this context, police are yet to probe the allegations.

It is pertinent to mention that on Monday late evening, a woman doctor, Supriya, 27, pursuing her MD at DMCH, committed suicide by hanging herself with a ceiling fan of a room at the girls’ hostel. She was a second-year student at the department of paediatrics at the DMCH.

The deceased also left a suicide note before committing suicide but did not blame anyone. Balwinder Singh, father of the deceased, who is a district health officer (DHO) in Jalandhar, alleged doctors at DMCH were harassing his daughter. “They did not even sign her project work,” he alleged.

The body of the deceased was handed over to the family after the post-mortem was conducted at the civil hospital. Police media coordinator inspector Kamadeep Singh said the victim did not blame anyone for the death. Sources say the deceased, in the suicide note, said she “don’t want to live anymore”.

Dr Harmesh Singh Bains, head of the department, paediatrics, DMCH, refused to comment and said police had been investigating the matter.
