In a case of suspected honour killing, a newly wedded couple was hacked to death allegedly by the girl’s family at Mughowal village in Garhshankar subdivision of the district on Sunday.

The couple had got married in the Punjab and Haryana high court about three months ago against the wishes of the girl’s parents and returned to the boy’s house on January 1.

The assailants also injured boy’s father whose condition is stated to be very serious.The deceased, Sandeep, 22, and Khushboo, 20 belonged to the Scheduled Castes and lived in the same village.

Khushboo’s parents had allegedly warned her against tying the knot with Sandeep as he was unemployed but both went ahead with their plan and opted for court marriage. They lived at various places but on persistence of boy’s parents, they decided to return.

Sandeep’s mother Udham Kaur told the police that five armed persons, including the girl’s father, brother and uncle, came to their house around 4 pm and attacked their  son, daughterin-law and husband Parkash.

The villagers informed the police and took the injured to the civil hospital. Sandeep had died on the spot. Doctors tried to resuscitate Khushboo but their efforts failed.
