Karbi Anglong continued to remain tense following incident of alleged rapes of three women in two adjacent villages in eastern Karbi Anglong allegedly by Indian army personnel engaged in counter insurgency operation on Monday last.
Several women organisations and student organizations staged massive demonstration before the Deputy Commissioner (DC) office demanding drastic action against the erring army personnel.
Young girls and youths demonstrated with placards some of which read “hang the rapist”, “go back Indian army”, “ensure safety of women”.
A joint memorandum submitted to the deputy commissioner (DC) Mukul Gogoi demanded immediate arrest of the accused and adequate compensation to the victims.
Additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Hunmili Teronpi, who is conduction probe into the incident, accompanied by DC Mukul Gogoi, SP Karbi Anglong MJD Mahanta and high level army officers Thursday visited the place of incident to take stock of the situation.
SP and army authority have assured that erring army personnel would brought to book once the identification process was done.
It may be mentioned that a 50-year-old lady and her 38-year-old daughter-in-law and her 15-year-old daughter were allegedly raped by the army jawans in village Sarthe Tokbi under Dokmoka police station around 7 p.m. on the pretext of searching insurgents.
In the incident, one village level worker of ICDS was mistreated by jawans when she protested and a 3-year-old infant also received blow from rifle butt. The incident was reported to Dokmoka police station April 8 and two separate cases were registered and the victims were sent to Diphu civil hospital for medical examination.
On receiving official information, DC Karbi Anglong Mukul Gogoi immediately ordered magisterial investigation into the incident headed by ADC Karbi Anglong, Hunmili Teronpi. The victims were sent back to their residence under police protection.
Sarthe Tokbi village is around 35 kilometers from the police station. Villagers told media persons that due to hostile terrain and remoteness of the place of incident from Dokmoka town it took more than 24 hours to report the incident, district police authority considering cognizance of the matter assigned one lady DSP to investigate into the incident April 8.
Members of various civil society organisations, who had served 24-hour deadline to the government for initiating action, threatened to impose general strike for indefinite period if government failed to reach the logical end. The members remained steadfast on their stand. “We are watching the whole matter closely till now we are satisfied with the government performance but the offenders will have to go behind the bar without much delay and they should get exemplary punishment,” S. Teronpi, a university scholar of Assam University Diphu campus told this Correspondent at protest demonstration before the DC’s office.
Meanwhile, Karbi Nimso Chingthur Asong (KNCA) general secretary Pratima Enghipi has alleged that around 11 to 12 army personnel of Jat regiment entered the residence of Dar Tosso in village Sarthe Tokbi and molested his 15-year-girl. When the mother tried to free her daughter from the clutch of the perpetrators, she too became victim. Till filling of the report no reaction has come from the army.
