An 18-year-old rape survivor from Haryana took her own life Nov. 1 — seven months after being forced to marry her rapist as dictated by Panchayat, the village council. She had hung herself from a ceiling fan in her in-laws’ house.

The day after the Dalit community woman died, her mother, Sarla, blamed the daughter’s husband and in-laws, claiming they had tortured her, wanted a divorce, and provoked the 18-year-old to take her own life, The Indian Express reports. The accused husband, Anuj, was acquitted of rape charges on Sept. 22.

The woman’s mother had pressed dowry charges against her daughter’s husband and in-laws and claimed they were seeking a divorce because they were looking to have him marry again and obtain a new dowry.

“They even offered to pay alimony, but we refused,” Sarla told The Indian Express on Nov. 2. “They began torturing her and denied her food and water. They didn’t let her touch anything in the house since we are from the [Dalit] community.”

Charged with dowry harassment and abetment of suicide, Anuj, 22, and his parents — Raj and Veena Kishore — appeared in court on Nov. 4 and were sent to judicial custody.

“I want justice for my daughter — the accused must be punished severely. Her only mistake was that she fell in love, and she paid for it with her life,” Sarla said, clarifying that her daughter fell in love with Anuj in early 2015.

The girl’s family wanted the girl to marry Anuj soon after she became legal age, since the news of their affair made it highly unlikely someone else from the community would marry her.

Yet because Anuj’s family is from upper caste Rajputs, Anuj’s family rejected the notion, Sarla claimed. Soon after, based on the teen girl’s family’s complaint, Anuj was arrested and charged with rape in October 2015.

The Panchayat intervened and forced the two families to allow the young adults to marry in a compromise deal that would see the rape charges dropped. In April, after the teen girl turned 18, Anuj was granted bail and married his rape victim.

“[But] she was subjected to physical and mental torture. They had an altercation on Monday as well,” said Sunil Kumar of the Jagadhri City Police, according to the Times of India via The Independent.

Sub Inspector Vijay Walia, the case’s investigator, said the case was categorized under Section 304B (dowry death).
