#RIP – Veteran Leftist Sadhan Gupta – Independent India’s first visually-challenged MP

Independent India’s first visually-challenged MP Sadhan Gupta has died following age-related illness.

The veteran Communist and eminent lawyer died late on Saturday night, Communist Party of India (Marxist) party officials said. He was 98 and is survived by four daughters and a son.

Biman Bose condoles 

Left Front chairman and CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Biman Bose condoled the passing away of the veteran leader.

Born in Dhaka, Mr. Gupta was educated at the Calcutta Blind School and went on to study Economics from the Presidency College and law from the University of Calcutta.

In 1953, the CPI(M) leader became India’s first visually-challenged Parliamentarian when he won from the Kolkata south-east constituency. He was re-elected to Parliament for the second consecutive term and remained an MP till 1962. Later on in 1986, he became the first visually-challenged Advocate General of West Bengal.

Mr. Gupta was also the founder-president of the National Federation of the Blind and the first president of the Indian chapter of Disabled Peoples’ International.
