aadhar unique id Supreme Court Madhya Pradesh chief secretary de Sa compulsory mandatory voluntary

Bhopal: Cocking a snook at the crucial Supreme Court order said ‘Aadhaar’ card use was purely voluntary and not at all mandatory, the MP Government has decided to make it compulsory for getting state government jobs.

On July 1, the chief secretary of Madhya Pradesh, Anthony de Sa directed that mention of Aadhaar (unique identity) number should be made mandatory in the application forms of the Professional Examination Board (PEB) and MP Public Service Commission.

These two agencies conduct the recruitment tests for different levels of government jobs in state.

The chief secretary’s direction however stands in contrast of the October 15, 2015 order of Supreme Court bench headed by the then chief justice of India HL Dattu.

The chief secretary came out with the directive during a meeting to review the progress of Aadhaar card making in state.

It was mentioned during the meeting that 99% of people in state over 18 years of age have the identity card, but are unaware about it.

It was thus decided that special campaign would be launched to link 100% population to Aadhaar and special resources would be made available at panchayat level to make people aware about the identity card and its use.

De Sa also said that process of linking all services and welfare schemes to the card is on.

The SC in October had mentioned that the voluntary nature of Aadhaar usage would continue until the court finally decides whether making Aadhaar compulsory violated right to privacy of citizens.

Aadhaar card making involves finger printing and iris impression (eye scanning) of the citizens. Questions have been raised over the data so generated and the apprehensions of its misuse.
