Delhi:Five policemen and a station house officer (SHO) were suspended in the capital for allegedly killing a 25-year-old fruit seller while in custody and later dumping his body in an isolated park to destroy evidence.

The SHO and the five policemen of the Adarsh Nagar station are also alleged to have cleaned the blood at the crime scene and manipulated other evidences, police sources said.

A whistle-blower from the same police station alerted the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of the Model Town police sub-division about the incident. The ACP informed DCP (northwest) Milind Dumbre and other higher-ups in the Delhi Police.

An internal inquiry confirmed the involvement of the six police personnel, who were then placed under suspension and sent to district police lines till further orders.

“The six have been booked under sections of culpable homicide (304 IPC), wrongful confinement (342 IPC), destruction of evidences (201 IPC) and common intention (34 IPC). The FIR was registered at the Adarsh Nagar police station,” said Dependra Pathak, Delhi Police spokesperson. “If found guilty, strict administrative and legal action would be taken against them,” he said.

The deceased has been identified as Sompal, a resident of Azadpur. He was picked up by the police in the afternoon of December 28 over a quarrel. He was brought to the police station for questioning. Sources said that during the night, he was beaten to death.

After his death, SHO Sanjay Kumar panicked, and, he, along with four constables — Kuldeep, Surendra, Indraj and Sulendra — dumped Sompal’s body at the isolated Majlish park near Adarsh Nagar Metro station, sources said.

The next day, a passer-by called the police control room, seeing Sompal’s body. “On Friday, a case of culpable homicide and destruction of evidence was lodged against the policemen,” said a senior police officer.

Officials from the police station claimed that Sompal was involved in five theft cases. However, the FIR against the police officials, accessed by DNA, has no mention about the theft cases.

The relatives of the victim said that they came to know about Sompal’s death on Sunday when a policeman knocked their doors in the afternoon with a photograph of Sompal. “The police told us to collect the body of Sompal from the hospital. They are not telling us how and where he died,” said one family member.
