Against the backdrop of the suicide by Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula, the government has decided to review the implementation of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act, 2015, across the country.

Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot will chair a meeting in this regard on February 17 to deliberate on the ways to ensure proper implementation of the Act so that it may act as a deterrent to crimes against SC/ST community members. “The Union Minister will review the implementation of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act, 2015, and seek details of action taken in cases of crimes against SC, ST members.

“The aim is to ensure the Act is implemented in true letter and spirit. Despite the deterrent provisions made in the PoA Act, continuing atrocities against SC/ST members is a cause for concern,” a senior ministry official said.

The meeting is significant in view of the amendment made in the Act, which puts greater responsibility on the state governments and Union Territory administrations to augment the infrastructure and human resources for its implementation, the ministry said.

The amended Act came into force from January 26.
