People of Japan convey their solidarity with everyone gathered at the People’s National Convention Against Nuclear Energy and express their agreement with National People’s Charter Against Nuclear Energy.

Reports that the Koodankulam NPP has reached criticality have also appeared in the Japanese media. We condemn the Indian Government’s blatant disregard for the strong protests on the part of the local residents around Koodankulam as well as the many whistleblowers who have warned of the dangers of this NPP to so many Indian people.

We salute the people of Koodankulam and their long, intense struggle, which they have maintained for 700 days. Your courage has given so much strength to us in Japan, fighting against nuclear power since the Fukushima disaster. The protest movement at Koodankulam, its non-violence and persistence, holds a very important place in the history of the struggle for a nuclear-free world. Even if the plant is commissioned, our solidarity with the people of Koodankulam remains unchanged. We believe that the day will come when that inhumane, dangerous monstrosity will be shut down. Until that day, from Japan, we will fight, alongside you, with all our strength for a nuclear-free world.

Because of the nuclear disaster that started in Fukushima on March 11, 2011, 150,000 people are still prohibited from returning to their homes and the authorities have been unable to make proper plans for decommissioning the reactors. Despite this the Government of Japan is aiming to restart the idled NPPs and not only that, they are promoting the export of nuclear reactors. India is one of the countries nuclear exports are aimed at and one of the proposed sites is at Mithi Virdi, in the same state of Gujurat, where the National Convention is being held.

As the country that has experienced the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the World War II and as the country which caused the nuclear disaster at Fukushima, we are strongly opposed to nuclear weapons and nuclear reactors. We also declare our staunch opposition to Japanese exports of nuclear technology and to the promotion of nuclear reactors in India.

Post 3-11, India continues to stick to its policy of promoting nuclear power and Koodankulam is the first new NPP to be commissioned since Fukushima. The ‘false myth’ of ‘absolute safety’ has already totally disintegrated in the wake of not only major accidents at Chernobyl and Fukushima, but also numerous nuclear accidents occurring around the world.

In these circumstances, holding this National Convention Against Nuclear Power, which will be attended in large numbers by people opposed to nuclear power, from all over this vast country of India, is indeed a dramatic development for the anti-nuclear movement of the Indian people.

We request that the Government of India listen to the voices of its people and abandon its pro-nuclear policy. We also request that the Koodankulam NPP be stopped and that plans for all new construction of nuclear reactors be renounced. We ask that India be a leader in creating a nuclear-free world.

We will make every effort to stop Japanese exports of nuclear facilities to India in the future.

We hope that your Convention will be successful and that each of you will go back to the places you live and continue your anti-nuclear movements with dynamism and ingenuity and that one day there will be zero nuclear reactors in India.

In Japan, we will be fighting with you to make a new ‘post-nuclear’ India a reality.

NO to Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant!

Indian Government: Abandon your pro-nuclear policy!
