India, July 15 — Almost 50,000 cases of crime against women are pending before various subordinate courts in Maharashtra.

A query under the Right to Information has revealed a steady increase in the number of cases related to atrocities against womensince 2008.

Figures provided by the deputy registrar and public information officer of the Bombay high courtSS Kanthale, to city resident and RTI activist, Vihar Durve, have shown that there are 49,170 cases till May 31, 2013 that have not yet been closed.

Of these, almost 15,000 cases have piled up in the past five years – the number of pending cases in 2008 was 35,366.

In addition to the figures, Kanthale’s reply also throws light on the pending demands for fasttrack courts before the state and central governments.

Kanthale states that the Chief Justice had directed the state government to continue the fasttrack court scheme for 100 courts till March 31, 2016 and thereafter continue the same as a permanent feature of the state judiciary.

The matter, which was communicated last year, is under the consideration of the Maharashtra government, the reply states.

In April this year, a letter sent by the law and judiciary department had requested the high court administration to set up the courts at the earliest in the wake of the Delhi gang rape, following which there has been a demand for speedy disposal of cases of atrocities against women.
