MANANTHAVADY:  In a tragic incident that lays bare poor health infrastructure and medical negligence faced by marginalised communities  in Wayanad, a tribal woman lost triplets born to her.

The 27-year-old tribal woman Anitha was admitted to the District Hospital, Mananthavady, on Wednesday at 6.30 am, but was referred to the Kozhikode Medical College within an hour because her condition was risky.

The gynaecologist on call duty, Dr Sushama, allegedly referred the case without attending to her. The duty doctor has now been placed under suspension following an investigation report by the District Medical Officer.

The woman, who resides at Edathana tribal colony in Valad, was taken to Kozhikode Medical College in an ambulance, but as the vehicle reached Panamaram she began to give birth and was taken to a nearby Primary Health Centre. She delivered a boy while at the PHC and was rushed to the Taluk Hospital in Kalpetta.

The woman delivered a girl as the ambulance reached Kambalakkad, but the newborn weighing 400 grams died immediately after the birth. Later, in the Taluk Hospital she gave birth to a boy weighing 600 grams, which died soon.

The woman and the first child born to her at the PHC in Panamaram were then taken to Kozhikode Medical College.

The child died at KMC on Thursday morning. ADM
