New Delhi: The national capital is becoming the most unsafe place for women with each passing day. It has topped the list of 53 cities across the country for crimes against women, including sexual violence. If a report entitled ‘Crime in India 2013‘ released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) is something to go by, incidents such as rape and molestations increased by two to four times in 2013 as compared to 2012.
According to the NCRB, a total of 585 cases of rape were registered in the year 2012. Shockingly, this figure went up to 1,441 in 2013.
After the horrific gangrape and murder of a medical intern on December 16, 2012, a stringent anti-rape law was introduced with an aim to bring down the cases of crime against women. But the latest data shows nothing has changed in the country.
The data says 3,069 cases of assault on women took place in Delhi, which has a women population of around 76 lakhs, in 2013 with an “intent to outrage their modesty”. But only 639 cases of this nature were registered under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code.
The cases of “insult to women’s modesty” increased to 807 in 2013 from 181 in 2012. Such cases are registered under section 509 of the IPC.
The number of kidnapping of women also witnessed an increase in 2013 as compared to 2012. As many as 3,093 women were abducted from the city in 2013 as against 1,787 in 2012.
A total of 2,879 cases of domestic violence (cruelty by husband or his relatives) were reported in the city in 2013. It was 1,870 in the previous year. The city registered 125 cases of dowry deaths, highest in the country.  It increased to 125 in 2013 from 100 in 2012.
