In a major setback for disgraced liquor baron Vijay Mallya, the government today revoked his passport. The corporate honcho, who is facing legal proceedings for default of loans worth over Rs 9,000 crore, might soon also face arrest, revealed top government sources.

“After having considered replies by @TheVijayMallya, MEA revokes his passport under S.10(3)(c) & (h) of Passports Act,” MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted.

Top government sources said that everyone must follow the law and no one will be allowed to break the law and get away with it.

Ads by ZINCpol next week itself for a notice to arrest Mallya. The beleaguered industrialist had ignored three summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate, seeking time till May to depose before the agency.

A court in Mumbai had also issued an arrest warrant for him after he failed to appear before investigators looking into the finances of Kingfisher Airlines. Mallya is believed to be in the United Kingdom after he left India on March 2.

Meanwhile, the ministry is also consulting legal experts for Mallya’s deportation, whose stay in the UK is now illegal.
