ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad high court on Friday directed medical authorities in UP to stop the ‘finger test’ on rape victim and employ modern gadgets to ascertain the crime. It also said that DNA test centre like the one in Hyderabad be established in UP at the earliest so that courts and investigative agencies were not compelled to send DNA samples at high costs to specialized facilities at Hyderabad.
Passing the above order on a capital appeal filed by one Akhtar of Badaun, a division bench comprising Justice Amar Saran and Justice Vijay Laxmi said that in order to ensure quick justice in rape cases, the material collected from victims or the accused should be sent for DNA analysis for ensuring that forensic evidence in the crime is available.
The appellant, Akhtar, was awarded life term for raping and killing a 12-year-old girl. However, after hearing both sides at length, the court converted the capital punishment of Akhtar into life imprisonment.
