He had all the documents to prove that he was an Indian citizen: ration card, passport, Aadhaar card, even a driving licence. Finally what gave him away was his accent.Sahar police on Monday arrested a 33-year-old Bangladeshi on his way to Dubai with a fake Indian passport. Kabir Ahmed was caught when immigration officials at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) got suspicious about his accent -he claimed he hailed from Maharashtra., but did not sound like one.

Ahmed later confessed that he had been in India since 1999, and worked as a labourer at various construction sites.

Officials said Ahmed managed to get a fake passport issued by the Thane passport office. “ He obtained the fake passport with the help of a driving licence and Aadhaar card, which he got in 2007 with fake documents,“ said senior inspector B T Mukhedkar.

Ahmed had been living in Thane ever since he entered India through West Bengal, officials said. “ Ahmed claimed that he paid Rs5,000 to an agent to enter India in1999. A probe is on to get details of the agent. He got his visa stamped on May11to fly on May15, when he was stopped. All the IDs he obtained are original but he applied using fake documents,“ said sub-inspector Sachin Jadhav .

Investigators found that Ahmed, during his stay in Tha ne, was employed with a construction supervisor in Bhiwandi. “He befriended a man and got hold of a copy of his school leavingtransfer certificate, which he forged, and used it to obtain a driving licence in 2007.Later, he used the driving licence to get a ration card and an Aadhaar card,“ said the police.

In 2007-13, Ahmed worked under the supervisor and applied for an Indian passport, using the driving licence, ration card, Aadhaar card, and the a fake school transfer certificate. “Ahmed said he wanted to fly to Dubai to make it big.His friend was unaware about him forging the leaving certificate,“ said the police.

Ahmed submitted the driving licence and Aadhaar card, which had a slight variation in name.
