  • Incident took place at a government school in Supaul district
  • Six of them are in critical condition
  • Local boys would scrawl lewd remarks on the school’s walls

In a grim reminder of the horrific Muzaffarpur sex scandal case where minor girls were sexually violated over several months, three dozen girls of a government residential school in Supaul district were beaten up by goons for opposing their sexual advances. The girls, many in critical condition, are undergoing treatment at a local government hospital. Three persons, including a woman, have been arrested in this case.

“We have registered an FIR in this case and arrested 3 persons, including one woman. We have identified the accused,” said Pankaj Darad, Inspector-General of Police, Darbhanga zone.

The barbaric incident took place at the state-funded Kasturba Gandhi residential school in Triveniganj block’s Dafarkha village in Supaul. More than 80 girls, mostly from the SC-ST community and aged between 8 and 12 years, living at this school were being sexually harassed and subjected to lewd remarks for the last several weeks by local boys.

The girls had earlier complained to the school authorities regarding this but nothing came of it. What is shocking is that the boys used to post lewd remarks on the school wall, which led to the girls being further embarrassed.

“Whenever we went to play on the ground, local boys used to come and pass cheap comments at us. They also wrote vulgar things on the wall of the school. We complained to the school management regarding this but nothing happened,” said one of the injured girls.

On Saturday, when the girls found a boy writing lewd remarks on the school wall once again, they objected and scolded him. However, after a few minutes more than 150 people gathered at the school armed with lathis and sticks and attacked them. The girls were thrashed brutally, many of whom suffered major internal injuries.

When the district administration came to know about the incident, they rushed the girls to a nearby government hospital. Of the three dozen girls who were admitted at the hospital, 12 of them returned after receiving primary treatment but almost two dozen girls are still undergoing treatment. Six of them in critical condition were referred to the civil hospital for advanced treatment.

Supaul Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan who visited the injured girls at the Triveniganj hospital lashed out at the local administration for failing to provide security to the girls.

“The girls are unsafe in Bihar and the local administration is trying to cover up the case. An FIR was registered in this case only after I intervened. I demand that the government act on erring district officials,” said Ranjan.
