THOOTHUKUDI: A Dalit member of Puthiya Tamilagam (PT) party was hacked to death by a gang of caste Hindus at Srivaikuntam on Sunday night. The victim was identified as Baskar, a resident of KTK Nagar, Srivaikuntam.

On Sunday night while Baskar was returning home the gang stopped him near Pudukudi Petrol station and hacked him to death. After murdering him the gang fled.

Police were informed and they filed a case at Srivaikuntam Police station. The body was sent to Thoothukudi GH for postmortem.

Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police, M.Durai, inspected the spot. After the incident police strength was increased to prevent a communal clash at and around Srivaikuntam.

Local sources claimed there was a long pending dispute between the KTK Nagar people, where mainly Dalits lived, and people of Padmanamamangalam, dominated by caste Hindus.

Baskar was earlier involved in several disputes with caste Hindus and six months ago he had attacked a caste Hindu person, claimed the sources. One of the gangs would have waited for a chance and would have murdered him, the sources claimed.
