NEW DELHI: So far, Delhi Metro stations have had shopping malls, coffee shops and restaurants, and food and drinks vending machines. Now, stations will also have condom vending machines.

HLL Lifecare Ltd (HLL), one of the world’s largest manufacturers of contraceptives, has joined hands with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to make available male and female condoms at stations across the capital. Not just condoms but also oral contraceptives, sanitary napkins and deodorants will be available in the machines.

The first multipurpose vending machine was inaugurated by Lov Verma, secretary, ministry of health and family welfare, at Central Secretariat Metro station on Wednesday.

“This is a novel initiative of making available contraceptives and other healthcare products to the commuters of Delhi Metro”, Verma said after the launch. “I am sure this will further strengthen government of India’s initiatives towards stabilizing population,” he added.

M Ayyappan, the chairman and managing director of HLL, said they plan to install 25 vending machines at 21 Metro stations in the first phase. “The need for making condoms at the right place, right time and with minimum embarrassment calls for an innovative method of condom distribution. Multipurpose condom vending machines are a novel way to address this situation. Commuters can avail this facility while on move. It will also contribute to social issues of family planning, HIV/AIDS prevention and women hygiene leading to their overall health,” Ayyappan said.

Delhi Metro operates about 2,800 services every day with daily ridership averaging 24 lakh.
