Employees are blaming food poisoning and the gross negligence of the management for the death of the 8 women employees. December 18, 2021
Over 2000 employees of the Foxconn company based in Sriperumbudur, Tamilnadu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) were hospitalised on Saturday after complaining of food poisoning.
Friday midnight workers in thousands started to jam the NH48 highway that connects Tamilnadu to Bangalore.
The food poisoning occurred earlier this week at Foxconn’s dormitories, where a majority of its staff lives, a source told.
There are accusations that the company is trying to suppress the issue which led to anger among the workers and they came to streets.
Employees are blaming food poisoning and the gross negligence of the management for the death of the 8 women employees.
At midnight, when the incident came to light, the workers at the plant started protesting when they could not find out about the 8 women employees who were missing from the hospital where they were admitted due to food poisoning. When there was no response from the management they blocked the NH48 Chennai bangalore highway.
The news was not picked up by many news sources and questions are being raised on social media demanding justice for the deceased workers.
Foxconn is a Taiwanese company that makes iPhones for Apple Inc. Foxconn India is based in Sriperumbudur, which is on the outskirts of the southern city of Chennai. A bulk of the Taiwanese manufacturer’s workforce is women.
In the past, Foxconn has been involved in several controversies relating to employee grievances or treatment. Foxconn has more than a million employees. In China, it employed more people than any other private company as of 2011. In china alone, there have been several allegations of poor working conditions, the long working hours, discrimination against Mainland Chinese workers by their Taiwanese co-workers, and lack of working relationships at the company. In May 2010, Shanghaiist reported that security guards had been caught beating factory workers.
Foxconn has not responded to the incident till now.
