MEERUT: A nine-month pregnant Dalit woman who was brutally beaten for “contaminating” a garbage bin at a Meerut village last week succumbed to her injuries on Saturday.

Savitri Devi (34) was allegedly beaten with sticks and kicked in the stomach by Rohit Kumarand his mother Anju Devi. The victim’s nine-year-old daughter was present at the time when the attack occurred. An FIR has been lodged in the matter and the accused booked under relevant sections of the IPC.

The incident occurred at Khetalpur Bhansoli village of Bulandshahr district on October 15. According to her husband, Dilip Kumar, Savitri suffered a miscarriage soon after the beating and was admitted in serious condition to the district hospital. But doctors had sent them back. On Saturday, Savitri was rushed to the hospital again after she fainted and was declared brought dead by doctors.

“My wife had only touched the garbage bin accidentally. But Rohit and his mother Anju beat her brutally, accusing her of contaminating it. They belong to the Thakur community. We had approached the Kotwali Dehat police station on October 15 but were turned away by officials. A complaint was only registered on Friday,” said Kumar.

According to police sources, the two accused were initially booked under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the IPC. On Monday sections 304 A (death by negligence), 316 (causing death of unborn child by act amounting to culpable homicide) of the IPC and provisions of SC/ST Act were also slapped against the culprits, who are currently at large.

Superintendent of police (SP), city, Praveen Ranjan said, “A case has been registered against the woman and her son for beating the Dalit woman. An investigation will be conducted by an additional SP-level officer soon.”

Station house officer of Kotwali (rural) police station, Tapeshwar Singh said, “The post mortem report revealed that her death was a result of internal head injury.”
