Suspended IPS officer Sunil Paraskar on Wednesday night surrendered before the Crime against Woman (CAW) unit of the Crime Branch in connection with the case of the rape of a model. “We have followed the direction given by the competent court pertaining to the model’s rape case in which Paraskar is an accused,“ said Atulchandra Kulkarni, JCP (crime).Paraskar has been asked to appear before the sessions court’s special women’s court on Monday to collect a copy of the charge sheet. He will be the first IPS officer from the state to be arrested and charge-sheeted in a rape case. Mirror had on Tuesday reported that he would be arrested on Thursday.

Sources said the charge sheet contains statements of several witnesses, including personnel in Paraskar’s detail when he was the additional commissioner of police, north region.The CAW team is relying on the statement of a businessman who allegedly picked up the model at the behest of Paraskar before taking her to a bungalow where Paraskar allegedly raped her.

Paraskar’s wireless operator and drivers of his official cars are the other witnesses; they accompanied him when Paraskar allegedly took the model to his Navi Mumbai flat on the pretext of showing her a room he said he could give her on rent.

The model has alleged that Paraskar raped her multiple times, including in the Navi Mumbai flat.The police have also submitted technical evidence like SMSs and emails Paraskar allegedly sent to the model, and CCTV footage from a hotel where the model is allegedly seen giving Paraskar gifts.

The woman had met Paraskar first in April 2013, when her brother assaulted their mother over property issues and the police declined to register a case. The model’s photo also appeared on a website providing escort services. When she approached the police again, Paraskar allegedly began demanding gifts. The sexual assaults followed later.
