The grandfather of a nine-year-old girl, who was brought to a south Mumbai hospital for heart surgery, has been arrested for allegedly molesting her a day before the operation. He has been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The girl, who was apparently aware of ‘good touch and bad touch’ through various programmes in her school, complained about the incident to the nurse on duty, said police.
The girl stayed in an orphanage at Hingoli in Marathwada after her mother passed away a few years ago. She was brought by an NGO for heart surgery after doctors diagnosed a hole in her heart. “Her grandfather accompanied her and stayed with her. The incident took place on September 22. The girl told us she was lying on the bed when her grandfather touched her inappropriately. She called the nurse on duty and told her about it. The nurse informed the doctor and the higher-ups were apprised. The hospital informed us about the child’s complaint,” said Savalaram Agawane, senior inspector of Agripada police station.
Police said the incident took place a day before the girl was to be operated. “We have registered a molestation complaint under the IPC section and also invoked sections of the POCSO. The grandfather has been arrested,” said an officer.
