On Teacher’s Day, FTII faculty member goes on hunger strike for students

On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, students of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), who have been on strike for two months now found support in their faculty member Abhijit Das. A professor in the production department, Das went on a hunger strike on Saturday morning, and says will continue his protest till the time the Centre resolves the issues that have been raised by the students.

Disappointed by the attitude of the Information and Broadcast Ministry (I&B) Ministry towards the strike, Das took the step to hasten the resolution of the matter.

Sitting under a tree at the FTII campus in Pune, Das has not spoken to media yet. “He did not discuss this with us before starting his hunger strike. He was not forced by anyone to do so. He will continue his hunger strike until some decision is taken,” said Ranjith Nair, spokesperson of the student association, FTII.

In a similar incident some time back, the institution had asked 82 contractual workers to stop reporting to work from September 1. A student from the cinematography department, Sathish, went on a hunger strike. It was then that Prashant Pathrabe pushed the suspension a month ahead.
