GHAZIABAD: A 15-year-old dalit girl hanged herself from a ceiling fan in Modinagar, days after three men from an upper caste allegedly attempted to rape her and police refused to take action.

Police registered a case of abetment to suicide after the teenager committed suicide early on Sunday morning. However, they declined to register a case of attempted rape even after the girl hanged herself, her family alleged. The accused, Rinku, Chhotu and Sachin, allegedly tried to rape her on August 13. “The girl’s family had entered into a written compromise with the accused. Her mother was a signatory to the compromise. So, how can we register a case of attempted rape now? The family had not made any complaint earlier,” Jagdish Sharma, Ghaziabad superintendent of police, told TOI.

The girl’s father, meanwhile, said that his daughter committed suicide because police did not register any case against the accused. “I and my daughter went to the police a few times to file a complaint. We even went and complained at a ?tehsil diwas’ meeting of the local officials on Tuesday. Nobody listened to my daughter even though they assured us that action would be taken,” the victim’s father said. The SP refused to make any comment on the accusation.
