BHIWANDI: Two unidentified officers from Nizampura police station in Bhiwandi have been booked for allegedly torturing a 16-year-old labourer to force him to confess to stealing 1kg gold.

The boy, who later tried to end his life by hanging himself from a beam on the ceiling at his Mithpada home, is critical and in the ICU of a private hospital. Doctors said he has several internal injuries.

“Looking at the serious allegations against the policemen, the case has been transferred to the Thane crime branch,” Thane police commissioner Vijay Kamble told TOI.

On June 20, two unidentified cops picked up the boy from a house where he was working claiming they had got a tip-off that he was involved in a 1kg-gold robbery, said sources. The owner of the house informed the boy’s family and they rushed to the police station.

The boy’s elder brother, in his police complaint, said he found the teenager crying in the detection room. The boy reportedly told his brother the cops assaulted him and tried to falsely book him for robbery. The brother said a cop named Bhosale, who wasn’t involved in the “torture”, allowed them to go home but said the boy should come back the next day for further inquiry.

The complaint said the next day when the brother told the boy he would take him to the police station, the latter refused and said he was already in pain and if he went there they would beat him again. When the elder brother stepped out of the house, the boy reportedly hanged himself from the ceiling beam, but his other brother and a neighbour rescued him and took him to Sai Nath hospital.

On Sunday, the elder brother filed a complaint against two unidentified cops under IPC sections 330 and 34 with Bhiwandi Taluka police, as the hospital is in their jurisdiction. The case was later shifted to the Nizampura police, who refused to speak to TOI.
