The coordinator of People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), S. P. Udayakumar, embarked on a Kanyakumari to Kashmir rail yatra on Friday.

He told reporters that the 10-day yatra was a campaign for nuclear-free nation. He was accompanied by 25 anti-nuclear activists, including 15 women, on Himsagar Express.

“We have organised agitations, strikes, rallies and public meetings. The government has foisted over 380 cases on us. Despite people’s opposition, the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant is functioning. People’s voice should be heard by the government,” he said.

The team will utilise the journey to create awareness of the dangers of nuclear energy among the public

The Himsagar Express will reach Jammu on Monday. Mr. Udayakumar and his team will stay there for three days and leave Jammu on November 14 by Navyug Express to reach Tirunelveli on November 17.

The next yatra will be from Mumbai to Dibrugarh, Mr. Udayakumar said.
