The chargesheet stated that members of the trust, registered in 2015, would go for “unauthorised night patrolling with iron pipes and wooden sticks”.According to the CID (crime) chargesheet in the Una Dalit flogging case, NGO Sanatan Charitable Trust and its members arrested in connection with the incident were “terrorising people in the name of cow vigilantism in the region”.
The investigators also said that activists of the NGO in a secret meeting had conspired to assault members of the Dalit community found skinning dead cow in “full public view”, before handing them over to police for “cow slaughter”. The chargesheet, however, did not mention the date of the meeting.

It said six of the arrested accused used to do “night patrolling in the jurisdiction of Una taluka and it seems that they were involved in anti-social activities. They had been doing this even before the trust was registered on 27/12/15”. The investigation showed that “even after registration of the trust, such night patrolling continued and so did the anti-social activities”.
People associated with the trust targeted members of the Dalit community who were “legally” dealing in traditional skin industries, the CID said, adding that they used to “show their strength and would claim that members of the Dalit community were involved in cow slaughtering”.
“With an intention of spreading false messages that can create hatred for the Dalits across the state, the chief of Sanatan Charitable Trust, accused Shantilal Monpara, held a secret meeting with co-accused (Shailesh) Bhambaniya, (Rahul) Parmar, (Dipak ) Shiyal and (Rameshgiri Pramodgiri) Goswami and hatched a conspiracy…,” the chargesheet described this as the motive behind the assault on the Dalits on July 11.

This reflects that law and order in the area was in the hands of miscreants. The state must take responsibility in protecting dalits and Muslims who are being terrorised.
