Unnao: Amid the din of the pandemic that has engulfed our country, a shocking incident of police excesses has come to light from Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district, where an 18-year-old vegetable seller died on Friday, reportedly after he was allegedly brutally assaulted by a police constable and a home guard over violation of pandemic-induced restrictions. After the vegetable seller’s death, his family members, relatives and neighbours flared up in a massive protest.

The deceased vegetable vendor was identified as Faisal, a resident of Bhatpuri locality in Unnao’s Bangarmau area. As per the details mentioned in the FIR, on Friday afternoon, the teenage vegetable seller was standing near the footpath at the local vegetable market after finishing the day’s business. Constable Vijay Chaudhary and home guard Satya Prakash, both posted at Bangarmau Kotwali police station, arrived at the spot and allegedly began thrashing Faisal for allegedly breaching COVID-19. When locals protested, the constable and the home guard took Faisal to the police station, where he was allegedly assaulted again.

Around 3:45 pm, Faisal complained of severe chest pain. As his condition deteriorated, the cops dashed him to the local Community Health Centre (CHC), where doctors recommended that he be shifted to a higher medical facility for better treatment as his condition was critical. While efforts were underway to take him to another medical facility, he succumbed to his injuries.

Following this, the deceased teenager’s family members, relatives and local residents staged a protest on Bangarmau-Lucknow road with his body. They blocked the road and demanded strict action against the police personnel responsible for the teenager’s death and compensation to his family. Police personnel rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the irate protesters. Senior police officers also arrived at the scene and convinced the family to hand over the victim’s body for post-mortem examination, according to a report by The Times of India
