SUMMARY

D G Vanzara joined the Gujarat Police as deputy superintendent of police in 1980, seven years later he was promoted as IPS. Before he earned the tag of “encounter specialist” scripting terror plots  that went awry, between 2002 and 2006, Vanzara was known as an officer who would not allow any unrest in his jurisdiction.

While most of his junior officers are out on bail and seeking reinstatement, Vanzara will retire on Saturday in the closed walls ofSabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad where he is lodged for the past seven years as an accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh, Tulsiram Prajapati, Sadiq Jamal Mehtar and Ishrat fake encounter cases.

He will continue as prisoner number-4826. Jail Superintendent R S Bhagora said that he is expecting a communication from the government on Saturday announcing his retirement. Director General of Police P C Thakur told The Indian Express that “It is unfortunate that a brother officer is retiring from jail. Since he is not out on bail, a farewell has been organised which will be attended by Vanzara’s family.” The farewell will be held at IPS mess at Shahibaug, Dafnala, and expected to be attended by several police officers and Vanzara’s family members.

Vanzara’s brother K G Vanzara, who retired as an IAS officer recently, said that he has heard about a farewell to be hosted on Sunday evening. He and other family members are also likely to meet Vanzara in the jail on Saturday. Despite repeated attempts, Vanzara failed to get bail. His colleagues said that “this was the most unfortunate end of the IPS officer’s career.” Vanzara has published three books as an undertrial prisoner. Besides him, a number of his juniors, who worked with him during that period, are accused in the encounter cases.
