Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat on Sunday courted another controversy, saying people should have produced more children to get extra ration during the coronavirus pandemic.

Uttarakhand CM Tirath Singh Rawat made the comment while addressing an event in Nainital’s Ramnagar.

Days after triggering controversy with his remarks on women wearing ripped jeans, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat on Sunday stoked another row, saying people should have produced more children to get extra ration during the coronavirus pandemic.

Addressing an event in Nainital’s Ramnagar, CM Tirath Singh Rawat said those with less children in their family got less government ration during coronavirus-induced lockdown in comparison to “those with 20 children”.

“Those having 10 children got 50 kg while those with 20 got one quintal. People with two children got 10 kg. People built stores and found buyers,” Tirath Singh Rawat said.

“Who is to blame for this? Now you are jealous of it. When there was time, you produced only two. Why didn’t you produce 20,” Tirath Singh Rawat said.

At the same event in his speech, Tirath Singh Rawat confused Britain with the US, saying America ruled over India for over 200 years.

“Jaha America ke 200 varsh take hum log ghulam the, pure vishwa ke andar uska raj tha, kabhi suraj chipta hi nahi tha yeh kehte the. Lekin aaj ke samay me wo dol gaya bol gaya, pone teen laakh se bhi mrityu dar chala gaya [Once we were enslaved by America for 200 years, it was ruling the entire world, it was said that the sun never set there. But at present, it is struggling, the death toll [due to Covid-19] has crossed grim milestones],” Tirath Singh Rawat said.

Earlier, Uttarakhand CM Rawat courted controversy for his remarks on women wearing ripped jeans.

“If such women go out in the society to meet people and solve their problems, what kind of message are we giving out to society, to our kids? It all starts at home. What we do, our kids follow. A child who is taught the right culture at home, no matter how modern he becomes, will never fail in life,” Uttarakhand CM Rawat

“[Women] showing bare knees, wearing ripped denim and looking like rich kids These are the values being given now [at home]. Where is this coming from, if not at home?,” Tirath Singh Rawat said.

Despite the raging controversy, Tirath Singh Rawat, however, remained firm on his stand and later said that he still objects to ripped jeans. “I don’t mind jeans but even today, I object to ripped jeans,” Tirath Singh Rawat said.
